How are these steel drum art pieces created?
All of our metal art pieces are created at our own workshop in Port au Prince, Haiti, where we have been working for over 30 years.
For our natural steel drum metal art, using recycled 55-gallon oil drums, the metal artist removes both round ends of the drum and places these inside the steel drum cylinder along with dried banana or sugar cane leaves. He sets this on fire, to burn off any paint or residue. When it has cooled, the artist then cuts the cylinder drum from top to bottom and begins to flatten the drum. It is then pounded into a flattened "metal canvas" of approximately 3" x 6". With chalk, the design is drawn onto the flattened drum. Now, the real talent of the meta artist begins. Using hammer, chisel and a nail, the design is cut and the various decorative patterns are pounded into the metal. The finished piece is polished with a wire brush and then given a coat of a high quality clear finish.
Painted metal art - The process is much the same, as above, except that less hammered work is done on the piece. After the piece is cut and cleaned, it is given a coat of a rush preventative finish and then a base coat of acrylic paint. Upon this base, the decorative painting is done, by our very talented Haitian artists. The piece is then finished with a coat of clear finish.
